Team-wise breakdown and season goals for IPL 2026
The IPL 2026 season features a full double round-robin where every team plays 14 league matches, 7 at home and 7 away; therefore, every team must be consistent through the entire season, as opposed to being on a hot streak at the beginning. There will be no ‘easier’ matches and teams will need to put forth their best efforts. There are different squad dynamics for each franchise, incorporating new transfers and adjusting their objectives to be more defined before the playoffs. This is how each of the ten teams is positioned as the season is about to begin.
Royal Challengers Bangalore
RCB will begin their new season as title defenders for the first time. This is a weight of expectancy that no other squad on the entire league will have. The team is solid and consistent, comprising of skipper Rajat Patidar and veteran opener Virat Kohli, a staple of the 2025 championship squad core. Batting will be stepped up with left-handed aggressor Venkatesh Iyer joined the foray, complimenting their already skewed game plan.
Chinnaswamy will be difficult to defend with Hazlewood and Siraj’s bowling, as it is a highly batter-favoured ground. Proving their title to be no fluke is the main goal, and Rowing Constant will be under immense stress to dethrone best and grans best of each player 14 times.
Mumbai Indians (MI)
Mumbai Indians are the most successful IPL franchise of all time and perennial contenders, winning a record five titles. After the 2025 season, the MI management are looking to build off a competitive, yet inconsistent, 2025 season. They have added some much-needed depth to the middle-order and lower-order hittings of MI with the signings of Shardul Thakur and Sherfane Rutherford, the big-hitting West Indian.
Bumrah and Rohit are the tournament’s best batting and bowling leaders and provide MI with the most solid backbone of any franchise. It remains to be seen how the new players are integrated and to prevent a repeat of last season’s middle-order spin collapse. If Bumrah can stay healthy and Rohit is scoring runs MI should be considered favorites to win the championship.
Chennai Super Kings (CSK)
2026 will also mark a key transition phase for Chennai Super Kings. The legendary Ravindra Jadeja, a CSK icon for over a decade, left via trade, and wicketkeeper batter Sanju Samson joined. Ruturaj Gaikwad still has captaincy duties, and the identity of the team is moving away from nostalgia and into a younger, more dynamic team. Due to Samson’s middle order batting, CSK will obtain the explosiveness they have long desired at positions four and five.
The main players also create a strong core and balanced Gaikwad, Samson, Deepak Chahar, and Matheesha Pathirana. Gaikwad will also need to lead well for them to reach the playoffs for the 2026 season. CSK will also need to have an extremely disciplined bowling attack to make it through 14 games.
Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR)
Most IPL experts agree that KKR has the strongest roster for the 2023 IPL season has the strongest roster, combining firepower with experience, new and sensational signings, and a lot of veteran talent like Sunil Narine, Rinku Singh, and Andre Russell. Under-19 win World Cup and 2022 season KKR standout, Australian all-rounder Cameron Green, coming for a whopping price of 25.20 crore, is expected to perform greatly with both bat and ball.
Sri Lankan fast Matheesha Pathirana, signed for 18 crore, is a yorker speciailst and will be a great addition to KKR’s already dangerous death bowling. KKR’s Eden Gardens is one of the loudest and most intimidating stadiums in the world of cricket and add to the home advantage. KKR has all the tools to nab their third IPL title if Cameron Green performs up to expectations and Narine continues to dominate the middle overs.
Rajasthan Royals (RR)
Rajasthan Royals start off 2026 in an interesting transitional period. The trade of long-time captain Sanju Samson to CSK removes a player who had defined the franchise’s identity for almost a decade. Riyan Parag takes over as the batting leader — a role the young Assam batter has been preparing for over the last few seasons. The trade for Ravindra Jadeja restructures the entire roster by adding a match-winning all-rounder and an experienced head in the locker room.
Jadeja provides the balance RR’s aggressive top 3 needs by blending calmness in the middle overs, left-arm spin, and excellent fielding. The Royals’ early season schedule, with a mix of home games at the beautiful Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur and away games in Guwahati, provides them a good opportunity to start the season strong.
Gujarat Titans (GT)
Since the franchise’s debut in 2022, Gujarat Titans have been consistent, making the finals in their first two seasons and losing in the semi finals in 2024. In the 2026 season Shubman Gill, one of India’s finest young batters, will captain the team for the first time. As a result of the Sherfane Rutherford trade, the middle-order power hitting gap will need to be filled through team balance and batting order adjustments.
The Titans strongest asset is their bowling, especially in Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium, which favors quick bowling in the first half of the innings, and Gill will have to perform at the highest level for GT to contest a top-four spot.
Delhi Capitals (DC)
Delhi Capitals have been an underperforming team with an immense potential to win an IPL title, and this 2026 season is hopefully set to address their batting weakness. As a result, DC have traded with Rajasthan Royals to get Nitish Rana, improving their middle order. DC have a strong and balanced bowling attack that is well suited to the Arun Jaitley Stadium and its bowling friendly conditions due to the morning dew.
This season, DC need to resolve their historically poor batting in order to have a chance to contend for the playoffs and to end their streak of near misses. If their batting order comprising of David Warner, KL Rahul, and Nitish Rana fire, they will most likely end their IPL drought.
Punjab Kings (PBKS)
PBKS has been the most unlucky franchise in the league’s history, consistently assembling competitive squads yet missing playoffs by the closest of margins. In 2026, they split home matches between New PCA Stadium in New Chandigarh and the HPCA Stadium in Dharamsala, the latter being a breathtaking cricket venue set in the foothills of the Himalayan mountains.
PBKS has made a huge bet on T20 specialists known for explosive batting and for finishing innings. Their captain, Shreyas Iyer, is known for his tactical acuity and for having the ability to lead under pressure, as was the case during KKR’s most recent title-winning season in 2024. The franchise has the longest wait for a trophy, so the aim is to crown the squad with its depth and win the IPL title.
Lucknow Super Giants (LSG)
Lucknow Super Giants have a big-shot team coming into their fourth year of IPL. The big pick up is pace bowler Mohammed Shami who is going to make their team much better. Shami is a team player who swings the ball and can do a phenomenal job at the death. Shami is going to really improve their team.
KL Rahul will have a good batting line up with plenty of room for economic batting and explosive batting later to finish the innings. Shami will be able to get good bounce and do what he does best. Shami will be able to get good bounce at Ekana Cricket Stadium. LSG have one of the best teams in the upcoming IPL.
Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH)
Because of its entertaining side, fearless batting and aggressive style has been successful in the previous seasons of the tournament SRH, smashes huge totals and puts huge amounts of pressure on its opponents. This strategy will allow the 2026 squad, along with new signings, to focus on the hard edges of batter Liam Livingstone and pace bowler Shivam Mavi. New addition Mohammed Shami traded to LSG, creates a notable top position at the bowler’s attack.
Gaps need to be fill using recess method. To be successful for the 2026 season, SRH will need to be able to count on it’s batting to set the tone, and the bowling unit to be able to defend or chase down totals. The Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad will be favoured in terms of bouncy and true surface games on home fixtures.

The biggest of these was the trade between the Chennai Super Kings and the Rajasthan Royals, in which Ravindra Jadeja was sent to the Royals and Sanju Samson was acquired by the Super Kings. This trade represented a large change in the franchise’s identity, as Jadeja was a long-time member of the CSK core, while Samson had been with the Royals as their captain and wicketkeeper batter.
The Mumbai Indians, after finishing third in 2025, also made a number of trades, bringing Shardul Thakur from Lucknow Super Giants and Sherfane Rutherford from Gujarat Titans. These trades show the intention of MI management to strengthen their lower-order batting and domestic bowling with the addition of Shardul Thakur and Sherfane Rutherford.

New Rules and Regulations for IPL 2026
The governing council of IPL made changes to the player rules and match rules for the 2025-2027 cycle. With these changes, they try to keep the contest between bat and ball as balanced as possible, and to make the IPL the most technologically advanced cricket league.
Tactical Rule Continuations and Updates
The Impact Player Rule, which allow teams to substitute players at a natural break, remains one of the most important rules in the tactical side of the IPL. Although some critique it for pushing all-rounders to the side, it staying until 2027 allows teams to still have deep batting lineups and open bowling rotations.
Also coming in for the 2026 season is the “two-bouncers per over” rule that should help bowlers combat aggressive batting as a second tool. This rule comes in conjunction with the Smart Replay System. This system incorporates 8 high-speed Hawk-Eye cameras to provide TV umpires with a split screen and quick view to improve the speed and accuracy of DRS calls and appeals for stumpings, run-outs, and catches.
Salary Caps and Financial Rules
In the 2026 season, the maximum payment to overseas players has been capped at 18 crore rupees, the same as the highest retention price. Because of this, teams will not be able to exploit the mini-auction loophole any longer. The franchise salary cap for the 2026 season has been set at 151 crore rupees per team. For the first time in history, every player in the Playing XI (along with the Impact Player) will receive a match fee of 7.5 lakh rupees per match in addition to their contracted salary. This is meant to encourage players to actively participate in the 74 match season.
| Financial Regulation | Detail |
|---|---|
| Match Fee | ₹7.5 Lakh per match (Playing XI + Impact Player) |
| Franchise Salary Cap (2026) | ₹151 Crore |
| Overseas Salary Cap | Capped at ₹18 Cr or previous mega-auction high |
| Retention Limit | 6 Players (Max 5 Capped, Max 2 Uncapped) |
